Four Things to Teach Your Spouse Before Leaving Them Alone in the House

Do you wonder if your better half will be prepared in an emergency around the home?  If you are not, you should be.

The average cost of home renovation after a water leak is $25,000 and it takes weeks if not months to complete the work. However, if the water leak can be contained by turning off the main water valve, damages decrease from $25,000 to just $1,500!

  1. Turn off the Main electric. Know the location of the electrical box. When the door is opened, the shut-off switch is typically located at the very top of the panel box. Most of the time it is labeled ON and OFF. Switch it to the opposite side.
  2. Main water shut off. Knowing the location of your main water shut-off valve will help to prevent water damage. It is recommended that you label the valve with a bright colored tag so you can find it quickly. Inspect the valve yearly to ensure it is functioning properly.
  3. Shut-off valves under sinks. Most sinks have two valves located below the sink. There should be one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn off both valves.
  4. Reset a GFCI. Most GFCI’s (ground fault circuit interrupter) can be reset at the electrical outlet. Simply press TEST and then RESET.
Teaching these items to older children and your spouse only takes a few minutes and offers you peace of mind by protecting your most valuable assets: first- your loved ones, and second- your home.
