The average cost of home renovation after a water leak is
$25,000 and it takes weeks if not months to complete the work. However, if the water leak can be contained
by turning off the main water valve, damages decrease from $25,000 to just
$1,500!
- Turn off the Main electric. Know the location of the
electrical box. When the door is opened, the shut-off switch is typically
located at the very top of the panel box.
Most of the time it is labeled ON and OFF. Switch it to the opposite side.
- Main water shut off. Knowing the location of your
main water shut-off valve will help to prevent water damage. It is recommended that you label the valve
with a bright colored tag so you can find it quickly. Inspect the valve yearly to ensure it is
functioning properly.
- Shut-off valves under sinks. Most sinks have two
valves located below the sink. There
should be one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn off both valves.
- Reset a GFCI. Most GFCI’s (ground fault circuit
interrupter) can be reset at the electrical outlet. Simply press TEST and then RESET.
