The 4 Most Common Septic Systems in NE Ohio

The type depends on when the home was built and what type of soil is in the yard.

Thousands of city-dwellers across the state of Ohio never consider where the dirty toilet water goes when they flush. Homeowners outside of the city limits and not within the vicinity of the city’s water and septic lines should be more aware of what is happening under their lawns.

Septic systems are individual wastewater treatment centers under the ground outside of the home. The most common types of septic systems in NE Ohio include:

  • Septic Tank and Filter Bed
  • Septic Tank and Leach Lines/Field
  • Septic Tank and Leach Well
  • Aeration System

The septic tank is the first stop in the home’s wastewater treatment process. This is where the breakdown of waste occurs. Where the wastewater goes from there depends on the outgoing system.

Filter beds built in the past 40 years consist of perforated pipe surrounded by gravel with sand around the gravel buried underground. Older systems were made with clay tile pipes on top of large gravel, with a tile pipeline below the gravel as well.

Leach lines, or a leach field, are a series of perforated pipes surrounded by gravel running underground and parallel to the surface.

A leach well is a concrete tank with holes throughout all sides buried underground and surrounded by gravel.

An aeration system typically includes 4 chambers, each with its own purpose in breaking down and dispersing the wastewater.

No matter the type, all septic systems require regular maintenance and occasional inspections to keep them performing properly. If you are selling a home with a septic system, or are looking to buy one, be sure to have a septic inspection performed to identify any possible issues.
